Jaime Poblete
My work unfolds at the intersection between surface, gesture, and memory, where color
operates not merely as pigment but as a material trace, a threshold. I approach painting as
a spatial event — a practice of folding and saturation — in which the canvas becomes a
field of inscription, both corporeal and affective. Through repeated actions, akin to a
mantra, I develop monochromatic bodies that are not images in the conventional sense,
but temporal accumulations, acts of presence.
Working primarily with fabric — folded, sewn, or stretched — I use natural pigments,
ashes, salt, and acrylic resin to engage with the tension between transparency and
density, erosion and persistence. These substances do not illustrate but instead embody
processes: absorption, accumulation, and transformation. In this sense, painting becomes
an organic architecture — a porous skin, echoing Didier Anzieu’s concept of the “Moi-
peau,” the ego-skin, as a psychic membrane that contains, protects, and remembers.
The fold, both as material and concept, is central to my visual language. Inspired by Gilles
Deleuze’s reflections in The Fold, I explore its capacity to hold time, to conceal and reveal
simultaneously. The fold resists flatness; it is a gesture of interiority, an invitation to
contemplate what is hidden beneath appearance. Through folds, the work does not
impose form but generates space — not as illusionistic depth, but as physical and psychic
resonance.
Ultimately, my practice is a phenomenological inquiry into the image as a living surface —
one that touches and is touched. The artworks resist resolution; they oscillate, they echo.
They are fragments of silence sedimented in matter.
Jaime Poblete initially trained in Chile, studying Scenography and Art Theory at the Facultad de
Artes of the Universidad de Chile. During this period, he worked as a scenographer for various
theater companies, developing an interest in the use of light and space—elements that would later
influence his artistic practice. He collaborated with the Chilean artist Francisco González, and from
2002 to 2007, worked as a restorer at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Santiago.
This experience enriched his knowledge of specific techniques that would prove fundamental to his
future works.
After a period in Spain, living in Valencia between 2008 and 2010 while studying at the Academia de
Bellas Artes de San Carlos, Poblete moved to Italy, settling in Erba, near Como. It was in Italy that his
work took a new direction. The influences of scenography and restoration merged with a growing
focus on color, material, and space. His painting became increasingly processual, characterized by
the use of distinctive techniques such as dip-dyeing, folding, and stitching fabrics—a practice that
challenges the boundaries between painting and sculpture.
Many recurring themes in Poblete’s work have evolved from his early beginnings into a distinct
vocabulary. His rigorous personal research reflects a continuous interaction between various
disciplines of knowledge. In conversations with the artist, it becomes clear how his influences
extend beyond traditional visual art: philosophers, anthropologists, and writers are more often cited
as conceptual guides in his artistic journey than painters or sculptors. This interdisciplinary approach
underscores his desire to explore the profound meaning of physical matter and gesture, creating an
intimate connection between thought and artistic practice.
